Journeying to the Zugspitze
After immersing ourselves in the vibrant city life of Munich and exploring Neuschwanstein Castle, one of the most beautiful castles in Bavaria, Germany. Our Bavarian adventure took an exhilarating turn towards the majestic Alps – Zugspitze, the height is 2,962 meters. This is the Germany’s Highest Peak. Opting for a scenic drive from Munich to Zugspitze, we eagerly anticipated the mountainous landscapes awaiting us.
Navigating the Route
According to Google Maps, Zugspitze is approximately 100 kilometers away from Munich, with a travel time of around three hours using public transportation and two hours for private transport. We use our private transport though here firstly I introduce public transport and later I describe private transport. Here’s how to navigate the route.
Taking Public Transportation
Begin your journey with a regional train from Munich Hauptbahnhof (Munich Central Station) to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From there, transfer to another train bound for Eibsee. Alternatively, you can continue on the same train or opt for a cable car ride directly to the mountain peak.
Choosing Tickets
Selecting the right tickets can be confusing. Right now the best option buying the 49€ Deutschland ticket. But if it’s not available then you can go with “Garmischer Zoma Ticket,” which offers efficiency and affordability. This ticket covers various modes of transportation and activities for a comprehensive experience.
Purchasing the Deutschland Ticke or Garmischer Zoma Ticket
To purchase the ticket online, visit the Deutsche Bahn website and select the appropriate ticket type. For “Garmischer Zoma Ticket” do ensured for adults, which includes access to the summit of Zugspitze. Select your desired date of travel and complete the order process.
Planning Your Train Journey
Use the Deutsche Bahn website to find train schedules from Munich to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Be prepared for possible transfers and bus connections along the route. Verify the departure platforms and any additional instructions for a smooth travel experience.
For Private Transport
Alternatively, we go with our private transport. Navigating the Autobahn with its unforgiving speedsters, we found ourselves marveling at the first glimpse of the Alps on the horizon. Despite grappling with a manual rental car, our journey was punctuated with laughter and excitement, setting the tone for the Alpine escapade ahead.
Arrival in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Upon reaching the picturesque Alpine town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, nestled at the foothills of the Alps, we were greeted by stunning autumnal scenery. As we strolled through the charming streets, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of familiarity, stemming from the tales of my stepdad’s annual vacations to this idyllic destination.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, with its rich history and proximity to Germany’s tallest peak, the Zugspitze, offered a serene retreat from urban life. Settling into our accommodations, we were delighted by the cozy apartment boasting picturesque views. Guided by our hospitable host, we embarked on a tour of the quaint yet vibrant town, soaking in its Alpine charm and relishing the crisp mountain air.
Alpine Adventures Await
Eager to conquer Germany’s tallest mountain, the Zugspitze, we set out for a day of exhilarating escapades. Opting for a multi-leg journey involving a train and a gondola ride, we embarked on an ascent that promised breathtaking vistas and unforgettable experiences.
Choosing the Route to Reach the Summit
At the Zugspitze, travelers have two primary routes to reach the summit. The first involves taking the Cogwheel train followed by a short cable car ride, while the second option is a longer cable car ride from the mountain’s top to the lake below. Visitors can mix and match these routes based on preference, offering varied perspectives of the breathtaking landscape.
Boarding the Cogwheel Train
The journey commences from Garish, where a dedicated station for the Cogwheel train awaits. Parking facilities are available nearby for travelers arriving by car. After purchasing tickets from the automated machine, passengers can board the train, which offers open seating.
Ascending the Zugspitze
As the train ascends, it makes several stops along the way, offering glimpses of the surrounding scenery. The ascent takes approximately an hour and a half, passing through tunnels and picturesque landscapes. Despite the initial trepidation, the thrill of the climb and the promise of panoramic views spurred us onward, each step bringing us closer to the summit. Passengers can enjoy breathtaking views while en route to the final stop below the Zugspitze.
Exploring the Summit
Upon reaching the final stop, from towering peaks to serene valleys, the Zugspitze offered a glimpse into nature’s grandeur, leaving an indelible mark on our Alpine adventure.
There visitors are greeted with amenities such as restrooms, restaurants, and gift shops. Before ascending to the summit, take time to explore the surrounding area, which boasts stunning viewpoints and historical landmarks. Once at the summit, revel in panoramic vistas of both Germany and Austria, savoring the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Descending via Cable Car
To descend from the summit, travelers can opt for the cable car, offering a swift and scenic journey back to the lake below. With minimal wait times, passengers can enjoy a smooth ride down, marveling at the landscape unfolding beneath them. With hearts full and spirits lifted, we bid farewell to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, leaving with a newfound appreciation for the Alpine wonders that had captivated us. Upon reaching the lake, travelers can continue their journey back to Garish via the Cogwheel train.
